Tips on Purchasing
a Cat or Dog
By Theresa, Member of The Parent Station
1. Never buy from a pet shop.
Buying from a pet shop propagates the existence of puppy mills and animal
wholesalers (think supply and demand). Generally, the "breeders" that
sell to pet shops breed for profit and not for the betterment of that
breed.
2. Try your local animal shelter to find your
new friend!
There are so many great pets looking for homes. You will want to be
sure the animal healthy and happy.
3. When purchasing a puppy or kitten, make
sure the first round of vaccinations have been given.
Any reputable breeder or caring animal owner will have this done, unless
of course the breed has problems with vaccines. If this is the case,
there are very careful instructions that need to be followed. Make sure
you get that information before leaving with your new friend.
4. Be sure to find out how the animal was
raised.
When purchasing a new pet for you and your family, you will want to
make sure the animal was house raised so they are acclimated to everyday
noises and activities.
5. If the pet's parents are on site ask to
see them.
Look at them to see what kind of shape they are in. Do they look healthy?
6. Be sure to ask if the person selling the
animal guarantees the health of that animal.
This will help you to better understand the type of household this animal
is coming from.
